Mollie Burgess was the daughter of Moses Burgess and Caroline Brady. Mollie was born about 1845 in Fauquier County, Virginia. It is believed that Mollie was raped by a man named Smith during the Civil War. Steven Vince Burgess was the child who was born as a result. After the birth of Steven Mollie came to Greenbrier County, West Virginia to get away from the embarrassment of the situation. Moses Burgess had died by this time, but his wife Caroline Brady Burgess came with Mollie. Erasmus Helm Burgess was the oldest son and was the first to come to Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Both Erasmus Helm Burgess and Mollie Burgess were buried near Steven Vince Burgess and Sarah Jane "Sallie" Crookshanks Burgess. Steven Vince Burgess was born 28 Feb 1862 at Warrenton, Fauquier, Virginia, Some in Fauquier County, Virginia believe that there may not have been a rape, just an embarrassing situation for a wealthy Smith family. What ever happened the Mr. Smith did not marry Mollie Burgess from the poor tenant family of Moses Burgess and Caroline Brady. Notes of Michael Burgess page 279 62. Mary Catherine (II) "Mollie" (daughter of Moses (III). Born about 1843 in VA. According to a family story, she was attacked and raped by a field hand name Smith in the summer of 1861, during the unrest caused by the Civil War and had a son she raised herself. Listed in the 1870 census with her mother and in 1880 with her sister, Frances; has not been found in 1900, but appears in the 1910 census living with her son. Mollie died unmarried at Richlands, WV, on 8 May 1910, and is buried in the Calvery Cemetery. Her body was interred in Newbaltimorebapc, New Baltimore, Fauquier, Virginia. She married John Burgess Lewis in Fauquier, Va, March 18, 1884. John was born in Fauquier, Virginia 1836. Married as his second wife her cousin (?), John Burgess Lewis, on 18 Mar 1884 in Fauquier Co., (he was born about 1836, son of William Buckner Lewis and Jane Lee and brother of Susan Lewis, who married her cousin, James Monroe Burgess, and had one child: Ida Verona (born 1890: died unmarried, and is buried next to Zaccheus and Edwin Burgess in an unmarked grave in the Warrenton Cemetery). Listed with her mother in the 1870 census; lliving in 1910 with her cousin, Addison F. Burgess, working as his housekeeper(her daughter is listed with her). She died there on 25 Feb 1923 and is buried in an unmarrked grave in the New Baltimore Baptist Church Cemetary.
93 xi. Alice B Burgess was born in Prince William, Virginia November 1849. Alice died after 1923 in Of Washington, D C. She married Edwin Fletcher in Fauquier, Va, July 25, 1876.
