Jackson Judge John G. Jackson presided over the federal district court which began to meet in Lewisburg in 1819. Jackson;s first wife was a sister of Dolly Madison. He himself was a cousin of Stonewall Jackson. From Dorothy Davis, John George Jackson. An important recognition came to Lewisburg in 1819 when John G. Jackson arrived to hold the first session in the town of the newly created Unites States Court for the District West of the Allegheny Mountains. The rules of the new court proved that it should sit and maintain its records at Clarksburg, and Wythe Court House, now Wytheville. Cases originating in Greenbrier, Kanawha, Mason, Cabell, Nicholas and Monore counties and in part of Pendleton County were heard at Lewisburg. Jackson, a resident of Clarksburg and a brother in law of ex President James Madison was himself a former congressman of prominence. Jackson brought in dignity and and an unusual legal erudition to the federal bench, and he must have impressed attorneys, officials, and others in Lewisburg most favorable. In 1824, when several prominent members of the barin the Valley of Virginia launched a move to enlarge his circuit to include a court at Staunton, opposition arose in Greenbrier county. William Smith, one of its principal leaders, and others feared that the addition of Staunton to Jackson's circuit might result in the elimination of Lewisburg. Jackson, however, was willing to hold court at Staunton, and the Valley town was added to his circuit. Sessions of thecourt continued to be held at Lewisburg, although Jackson himself died prematurely early in 1825. Footnote Stephen W.
