Stephen Bailey OUR IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR MAYBE NO APPARENTLY A STEPHEN BAILEY LEFT A WILL IN 1660 IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA. We are reasonable sure that Stephen Bailey was our immigrant ancestor, for we find no record or indication that he was born in America. He appeared, with other Bailys - probably brothers or cousins in Northumberland County, Virginia about the middle of the 17th century. His first record was when he bought 50 acres of land in Northumberland County, 1657. In may 21, 1660 he married in Northumberland County, Ann, widow of William Walker, and died in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1697. We believe he was born in Gloucestershire, England from whence he emigrated to America. From an extensive study of more than fifty old Bailey Wills of Gloucestershire, dating back to 1545, we are constrained to believe he was a descendant of some of these, however, we did not make a direct connection. The name Stephen is found in these lines. (see wills) In a list of 10,000 emigrants who left the port of Bristol, England, for American Ports, between 1654 and 1679, we find no Stephen Bailey. No doubt he came before that date. There were more than 80 grants to Baileys in Virginia recorded before 1655; so we see that the Baileys were well represented in the early settlement of Virginia. They were also numerous in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and the Carolinas. These have migrated north, south and west until they now have descendants in every county and state in North America. Westmoreland County, Virginia Will Book page 124-125.
