Individual Note: WE DO NOT HAVE PROOF THAT WE ARE CONNECTED TO THIS SMITH FAMILY
CIRCUMSTANTIAL INFORMATION INDICATES THAT THERE IS A CONNECTION
Mollie BURGESS was raped by a farm hand named Mr. SMITH, Mollie and Mr.
SMITH were never married. After the birth of my grand father STEVEN
VINCE BURGESS Mollie moved from Fauquier County, Virginia to Green-
brier County, West Virginia. She moved to get away from the gossip
shame and humilitation of the rape. Mollie`s mother Caroline Brady
BURGESS made the trip to West Virginia with other children. Erasmus
Helm BURGESS, and George BURGESS made the trip to West Virginia.
To date we have been unable to identify the name of the SMITH family
in Fauquier County, Virginia. In talking to residents of Fauquier
County no one remembers the SMITH who is the father. Many believe
that he was from a well to do family in Fauquier County, Virginia.
Much of this information came from a close relative name Ray Lewis
"Tuni" BURGESS. This interview was held at the Calvary Methodist
Church Cemetary on Memorial Day May 1973.
There was a Judge Smith who lived nearby, some believe one of his sons
was our Mr. Smith.

Interview with Walter Crookshanks in May 1971 at White Sulphur Springs,
Greenbrier, West Virginia.
Calvary Methodist Church Cemetary, Richlands, Greenbrier, West Virginia.
Census dates do not agree with above dates, but Walter Crookshanks
verified that the tombstone dates and children were accurate.
This is one of the few families whose census records do not agree
with other records.
Walter told me that James Crookshanks was not really a Crookshanks,
but that he was left on the doorstep of Alexander Crookshanks and
Margaret Judy who raised the youth. His birth date of 1835 fits in
smoothly with the family so who knows for sure. No one in the family
ever found out who his real parents were, therefore, we are tracing
the CROOKSHANKS and they get the temple blessings. I feel very close
to this family. James Anthony Burgess.
There is some question as to relationship of James A Crookshanks. I believe
that he must be a son.
