WILLIAM COCKRIL and HANNAH ANDERSON
The First Generation
King George County, Virginia & Prince William County, Virginia
(1710?-1756?)
1a. Our earliest proven ancestor WILLIAM COCKRIL, was born about 1710 most likely in Northumberland
County, or Westmoreland County, Virginia. It is my opinion that William COCKRIL married Hannah ANDERSON in King George County or Richmond County, Virginia about 1738-1740 in King George County. We do not have
a marriage record only circumstantial evidence.
Hannah ANDERSON was born about 1718 probably in King George County, Virginia the daughter of Walter
ANDERSON and Mary TRAVIS. William COCKRIL passed away about 1756 a relatively young man in his
mid-forties or early fifties in Prince William County, Virginia and is probably buried in the Heflin Moffett Cemetery,
Carter’s Run, Fauquier County, Virginia.
William COCKRILL passed away about 1756. Mary ANDERSON sister of Hannah ANDERSON passed away in
the same time period. Henry MOFFETT married his sister-in-law Hannah ANDERSON about 1758. It was
common in those days that surviving spouses would marry.
We can take pride in the fact that our Cockrill ancestors came to America in the 1640-1680 time period.
After the death of William COCKRIL, Hannah ANDERSON married Henry MOFFETT about 1758 probably
in Prince William County, Virginia, but lived in Fauquier County, Virginia.
We are fortunate to have ten records on William COCKRIL, perhaps we will find other records in the future.
WILLIAM COCKRIL LEFT US ATLEAST 10 RECORDS
#1 3 Nov 1742: William COCKRIL witnessed the will of William THORNTON of King George County,
Virginia. Other witnesses were Elias SHARP and John Hobby. It is interesting to note that Walter
ANDERSON and other family members had relationships to the THORNTON family. Brunswick
Parish, King George County, Virginia Will Book A1 page 153-154.
NOTE: This places William COCKRILL in King George County, Virginia about the time Hannah
ANDERSON would be of age to marry. To witness a will William would have been atleast twenty
one years old, so he would have been born before 1721.
#2 10 Nov 1744: William COCKRELL of Prince William County, Virginia sold land to John West of
Stafford County, Virginia. The land was in Prince William County, Virginia. Stafford County, Virginia
Will Abstracts 1729-1748 page 112 found in Sparacio’s works.
#3 Richmond County Virginia Account Book Part 1.pP 30-32 Estate of Captain John Morton Deceased - . .
received of William Cockrill 5 Aug 1745. Is this our William COCKRILL?
#4 31 Jul 1747: Account of William COCKRILL carried forward from Ledger F. No additional entries
in account and no entries in credit account. Papers of Edward Dixon from Thomas Turner, King George
County, Virginia page 19.
#5 1751-1753: Prince William County, Virginia Tax List show William COCKRILL and Jeffrey JOHNSON
living next to each other or at least close by.
#6 1752-1753: Lease and Release from William COCKRILL to Jeffrey JOHNSON were acknowledged and
Hannah wife of said William were privately examined relinquished here right of dower in the lands
conveyed which were admitted to record.
NOTE: This is a great record as it shows that William COCKRILL’s wife was Hannah and it also shows
a connection with Jeffrey JOHNSON. William COCKRILL’s son Anderson COCKRELL and
Jeffrey JOHNSON’s daughter Mary would later marry.
#7 12 Oct 1753-1755: William SMITH has set up prior claim; 187 acres on Carter’s Run, adjacent to William
COCKAREL, Colonel William Fairfax, Walter ANDERSON, - Chain Carriers John Bowlen and Joseph
Nevel, Junior Surety. Surety William Baylis. Abstracts of the Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys
Fauquier County, Virginia (1715) 1744-1780 Compiled by Peggy Shomo Joyner Volume III page 137.
NOTE: This record places William COCKRILL on Carter’s run and shows a close connection to Walter
ANDERSON.
#8 8 Apr 1755: Lease and Release from William COCKRILL and wife Hannah to J. JOHNSON Prince
William County, Virginia Order Book 1739-1755. page 222 and Minute Book page 61.
#9 22 Feb 1785 Feb 22, 1785 from Joseph Neavill of Hampshire County, to Elisha CORNWELL, for 200 L, two
tracts of land in Fauquier County on Carter’s Run & Rappahannock Mountain, one where of contains about 116
acres, purchased of William COCKRELL & Hannah his wife, the other containing about 183 acres, purchased
of Colo John Bell & Frances, his wife. Signed Joseph Neavill, Witness - John Moffett, Jarvis (x) Cornwell,
John Wilkenson (Wilkinson) recorded 24 July 1786. Deed Book 9 page 159.
#10 24 Aug 1785 “ Jarvis CORNWELL and Duanna sold two parcels of land to William CARR for 150 pounds.
This land was sold to Elisha CORNWELL by Joseph Neville as deeds recorded in Fauquier County 24 Aug
1785, the said tracts purchased by the said Neville of WILLIAM COCKRELL containing one hundred
sixteen acres of land purchased of Col. John BELL containing one hundred eighty three acres lying in Fauquier County on Carter’s Run surveyed by Capt John MOFFETT 10 Nov 1787 contains three hundred
acres with all houses out, houses, gardens, fences, orchards, meadows, pastures, mills, woods, underwoods,
ways, water and water courses and every advantage.... To have and to hold the said premises with the appertenances unto him the said William CARR his heirs and assign forever and the said Jarvis
CORNWELL and Duanna his wife doth for themselves and their heirs.....Estate of inheritance in fee simple on the premises hereby conveyed and they are fee and clear from all manner or encumbrances whatsoever
and they the said Jarvis CORNWELL and Duanna his wife at any time hereafter the proper cost and charges in the law of him the William CARR assigns.” Fauquier County Deed Book 10 page 13.
NOTE: This record further confirms that William did in fact own land and lived on Carter’s run which he purchased from John BELL and sold to Joseph NEVILL. We have a record that indicates that
William COCKRILL owned a beautiful piece of property which he may have built, planted, and
developed. I believe that this land was the land that Hannah ANDERSON COCKRIL received from
her father Walter ANDERSON. I also believe that this land is close to the Heflin Moffett Cemetery
on Carter’s Run. I highly recommend that each of you visit Carter’s Run & the Heflin Moffertt
Cemetery.when going to Fauquier County, Virginia.
NOTE: William COCKRIL’s name is spelled differently almost every time it is written.
NOTE: We should note that the will of Augustine WASHINGTON father of George WASHINGTON the First President of the United States is only one page away on 156. King George County, Virginia Will Book
1 page 153-154 .
WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THESE RECORDS?
These are the only records that we have found that actually mention William COCKRILL. They are few
but they to provide valuable information:
a. William lived in or visited King George County, Virginia where Hannah ANDERSON lived.
b. William lived on Carter’s run in Prince William County, Virginia which would later become Fauquier
County, Virginia.
c. William COCKRILL was married and his wife was named Hannah.
d. William COCKRILL had close relationships with Jeffery JOHNSON.
e. Hannah released her dower rights to her Husband William COCKRIL
PROBABLE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM COCKRIL AND HANNAH ANDERSON
Much of what is to follow is simply conjecture, which I believe to be true after many years of research.
It is my hope that others will take an interest to secure more facts about this fragmented family whose
father passed away in the early years of his life. It is very possible that there could have been even more
children. When the word "about" is used we are simply calculating the date.
NOTE: We do not have proof that Anderson, Joseph, William, or Elizabeth are children of William COCKRIL
And Hannah ANDERSON, but must be listed because the facts are so compelling.
2a. Anderson COCKRILL born about 1740 in King George or Prince William County, Virginia. Anderson
married Mary JOHNSON about 1763 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died 1791-1792 in Fauquier
County, Virginia. (See Chapter Anderson COCKRIL)
2b. Joseph COCKRILL was born about 1745 in Prince William County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth
BOADEN 26 Jan 1765 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Joseph died at an early age in Fauquier County,
Virginia leaving an inventory proved on 25 May 1772. The inventory was approved by Charles Morehead, John Hudnall, and Absalom Adams. Fauquier County, Virginia Will Book 1 page 197.
Fauquier County, Virginia Minute Books 29 July 1766

Ordered recorded.
2c. William COCKRILL was born about 1750 in Virginia . He married Frances JONES.
William died in 1824 in Allen County, Kentucky. We need DOCUMENTATION of parentage.
NOTE: The circumstantial information concerning this family is startling in that
the family names are so closely related. (See Chapter 10)
2d. Elizabeth COCKRILL was born between 1752 and 1754. In 1759 Elizabeth COCKRILL
was bound to Kerr (Carr Bailey) Fauquier County, Virginia Minute Book 1 page 23.
NOTE: It is very likely that there were other children.
1740 Thomas COCKRILL is on the Rent Rolls of King George County, Virginia.
CHILDREN OF HENRY MOFFETT AND HANNAH ANDERSON
2e. Jesse MOFFETT was born 2 Mar 1759 in Prince William County, Virginia (later Fauquier County,
Virginia. Jesse MOFFETT married Elizabeth BAILEY about 1785. Jesse MOFFETT is buried in
The Heflin Moffett Cemetery, Carter’s Run, Fauquier County, Virginia.
2f. Daniel MOFFETT was born 30 Jan 1765 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Daniel MOFFETT married
Elizabeth MOORE.
OTHER RECORDS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE
1. 22-23 Feb 1763 Lease and Release: Between Henry MOFFET and HANNAH, his wife, and John MOFFET .. TRACT .. on Carter’s Run that was granted to Walter ANDERSON of King George County
Virginia for 818 acres. He devised one moiety to his son Cyprian and his daughter Mary late wife of
Henry MOFFETT. Deed Book 1 page 473-478. (Note: Mary MOFFETT was the daughter of Walter
ANDERSON.
2. Jesse MOFFETT is buried in what is now called the Heflin-Moffett Cemetery on Carter’s Run in
Fauquier County, Virginia. It is interesting to note that Thomas COCKRILL the grandson of
Anderson COCKRILL is also buried in that same cemetery. There were many markers in the
cemetery when I visited in the early 1970’s. Jesse was born 2 Mar 1759 and died 31 Aug 1832.
3. Anderson COCKRILL’s will states, “I APPOINT MY BROTHER JESSE MOFFETT.” Fauquier
County, Virginia Will Book 2 page 211.
WE ARE VERY BLESSED TO HAVE THE RECORDS THAT WE HAVE. WE KNOW ANDERSON
COCKRELL AND JESSE MOFFETT WERE HALF BROTHERS . Their mother was Hannah
ANDERSON daughter of Walter ANDERSON and Mary TRAVIS. Anderson COCKRELL was the
son of William COCKRILL and Jesse MOFFETT was the son of Henry MOFFETT. Hannah ANDERSON
was their mother.
IN MY OPINION THE FOLLOWING IS TRUE:
William COCKRIL is our ancestor and Anderson COCKRILL is his son. Furthermore, I believe they
are both buried in the Heflin - Moffett Cemetery in unmarked graves, on Carter’s Run, Fauquier County,
Virginia. Thomas COCKRILL and Jesse MOFFETT are buried there, so are the rest of the family members
in my opinion. As I have stood on that plot of ground I was over come with the beauty of the country side and
realization that many of our ancestors were born, lived and died in that area. I love that place
Death Date of William COCKRIL
William COCKRIL was living 28 Apr 1755. Jesse MOFFETT was born 2 Mar 1759. Normal calculations would indicate that Henry MOFFETT married Hannah ANDERSON COCKRIL at least one year earlier about 1758. William COCKRIL must have passed away between May 1755 and the
end of 1757. He must have been a young man in his early to mid forties when he passed away.
I have carefully reviewed Will Book C found in Prince William County, Virginia and do not find
a COCKRILL Will. Other Will Books have been destroyed or lost in Prince William County, Va

Chapter 11
William COCKRILL & Frances JONES
Allen County, Kentucky
1750-1824
NOTE: We believe that there are enough similarities to give this family their own chapter.
The birth date of William COCKRILL fits perfectly. Names of children match
beautifully. We cannot prove that this William COCKRILL was the son of William
COCKRILL and Hannah ANDERSON.
2c. William COCKRILL was born about 1750 possibly in Prince William County, Virginia He
married Frances JONES about 1773 probably in Virginia or North Carolina. William COCKRILL
died in Oct 1824 at Walnut Creek, Allen County, Kentucky. Frances JONES was born
about 1756 and died after 1841 at Walnut Creek, Allen County, Kentucky.
William COCKRILL was living in Rockingham County, North Carolina when on 6 May 1786 he
purchased 150 acres and another 90 acres on a state grant dated 11 Jul 1790. William sold 216
acres 24 Nov 1794 and 54 acres on 29 Oct 1813. In 1786 and 1794 William is listed as a resident of
Rockingham County, North Carolina. By 1813 William COCKRILL Junior lived in Barren County,
Kentucky and returned to and deputized his son Johnson J. to sell remaining land .
William COCKRILL also purchased land in Spartanburg County, South Carolina on 8 Jan1795 and
13 Apr 1796 both deeds were witnessed by Anderson COCKRILL. William COCKRILL’s eldest
son Lewis purchased land there on 16 Jan 1797. Anderson COCKRILL’s second eldest son
purchased land there 24 Feb 1801.
William COCKRILL is listed as number 2 member in the Boiling Spring Baptist Church records
which would seem to make him an original member , on the roll of 1794. The church was
reconstituted after an earlier congregation was scattered by Revolutionary disorder. William was
apparently religious and respected by his peers, so that he was elected messenger in 1795 and 1797
to 1800 and minister in 1802. He was called Reverend and probably preached part of the time from
1795 to 1800 during which time he attended meetings of the Bethel Association as a delegate. The
membership of the Boiling Springs Church totaled in the forties during this time period.
NOTE: We know that William COCKRILL and Frances JONES and Thomas COCKRELL and Lettetia BAILEY were members of the Baptist Religion. Very Interesting. A small
connection. Thomas and Lettetia were “Old School” Baptist at Thumb Run.
South Carolina Baptists 1670-1805 , Dr. Leah Townsend, 1935 page 128-130, Genealogical

Chester County, South Carolina in the 1790 census.
Records of the Boiling Spring Baptist Church, of Spartan District, Spartanburg County, South
Carolina list the following:
#2 William COCKRILL
#6 Joseph VENABLE
#30 Frances COCKRILL
#31 Lucy VENABLE
#46 Rebeccah COCKRILL
#59 Discy HAMMETT
William as number 2 would seem to be an original member, on the roll 1794
William COCKRILL and his family migrated from South Carolina through the Cumberland Gap in the
spring of 1804 on their way to Kentucky. They settled on Walnut Creek which is a six mile tributary
of the Big Barren River in what was then Barren County and became a part of the new Allen County,
Kentucky in 1815. So many people settled in this area, from the two Carolinas that it was called
“Carolina District”.
William COCKRILL joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church in what is now Allen County, Kentucky in
1804 and again was elected messenger.
William died in 1824 in his early 70’s . His widow Frances lived until at least 1841 when she
relinquished ownership rights to their land.

Born near Spartanburg, South Carolina, on 18 November 1799, Anderson HAMMETT
was the son of Jesse HAMMETT and Dianah COCKRILL. (See Mr. Boothroyd’s entry,
“Anderson HAMMETT and Mary Andrews NICHOLS,” KA 24-2-123). With his parents
younger sister, Cockrill grand parents and extended family (including his uncle Anderson
COCKRILL for whom he was named; see above), Anderson HAMMETT came to Kentucky
in 1804. He was married in Scottsville in July 1831 to another young teacher like himself
Mary Andrews NICHOLS. Anderson and Mary, who was born in 1809 near Canadargua,
New York, were the parents of eight children born in Allen County. The youngest Amine, was
Born 10 Jun 1852.
Also a merchant in Scottsville and Allen County coroner, Anderson experienced the
failure of his business in the panic of 1837 and again in 1852. In 1855, the family moved
to Hardin County, Kentucky, oxen-hauling their belongings over the Louisville Turnpike
--a journey of seventy miles which took five days. Failing in their efforts to reclaim lands
bought by Mary’s father in the land speculation in 1819, both parents and the three eldest
daughters turned to teaching.
Given land in Wisconsin by her brother in 1865, Mary and Anderson and their six
unmarried children began yet another move. They went first to Louisville, where they found
the city illuminated one night in celebration of the Union’s victory, only to be draped in
mourning the next day for the assassinated Lincoln. The Hammett family traveled nine days
by boat in the company of returning soldiers, down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to near
Tunnel City, Wisconsin. There Anderson was elected justice of the peace and was a berry
grower with the daughters began to marry. Anderson HAMMETT returned to Kentucky in
1871 to live with his daughter Teresa BRAWNER (1839-1920).
In Wisconsin, the three youngest daughters married English emigrant weavers,
including Amine, who was married to John BOOTHROYD on 4 July 1875. Mother Mary
HAMMETT made her home with the BOOTHROYDS, tutoring and selling school books.
In 1885, Mary moved with the Boothroyd’s to Iowa, where she died near Rock Falls on 30
May 1891. John Boothroyd who tried farming successfully enough to retire to the city in
1898, died 17 Jun 1929, Amine died on 14 Jan 1933 in Mason City, Iowa.

CHAPTER 4
WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA
ANDERSON, BROOKE, BROWN, COCKRILL
As far as I know this is the first time that the COCKRILL family of Westmoreland County, Virginia has been researched. Thanks to Isabel GOUGH and her wonder work The COCKRELL path Through Northumberland and Lancaster Counties and Some of the Families that Path Touched (1991) we are lead to research the few records that exist in Westmoreland County, Virginia. If we are not related to the COCKRELL families in Northumberland then perhaps we are related to the COCKRILL family in Westmoreland County. (See the Chapters at the end of this work for more information.)
Researching in Westmoreland County three hundred years ago is a challenge. We have to look at several families to see a very interesting pattern develop. My conclusion is that there is a very good chance that our family descends from the following Robert COCKRELL and William COCKERILL who obviously were connected with David Anderson, Henry BROOKE, and Original BROWN. I present the following information for our review. These families are so interrelated that there must be a connection.
We may never know the full story of the COCKRELL / COCKRILL family in Westmoreland County, Virginia, as the records are sketchy to say the least. Westmoreland and Northumberland counties are obviously neighboring counties. It is not a coincidence that all these folks with the COCKRELL surname came to Virginia in the 1644 to 1664 time period. We have to believe that there is a connection with all of these families. Perhaps the answer lies in England. Perhaps the connection could be in the Church found at SAINT BENET CHURCH, PAULS WHARF, LONDON, ENGLAND.
Cockrill family in Northumberland County, Virginia are very good all things considered. Westmoreland County, Virginia records on the Cockrill family are very limited.
Our goal is to determine which of these COCKRELL emigrants is our ancestor. To put our William COCKRILL in proper perspective we must understand that he was born about 1710 possibly as early as 1695. With that in mind let’s go hunting for his father.
Was William COCKRELL mentioned in these early COCKRELL Virginia emigrants our ancestor? We may never be able to answer that question. The William COCKRELL who came in 1654, was probably a young man may have been born about 1640. If we speculate this William could be the grandfather of our William.
We know that our William COCKRIL died about 1758 and have guess that he was born about 1710. We have always believed our William was a young man when he died in 1758. If we speculate that William was old 40 when he married Hannah, he could have been born say 1680-1685. Now we are getting closer to a father son relationship. We need documentation
The two Robert COCKRELL’s are older and possible father figures for the William COCKRELL of Westmoreland County. Certainly several of our COCKRILL families had sons named Robert.
To get a picture of the Cockrill family in Westmoreland County, Virginia I have divided the names into three generations with hopes that we may begin to see possible families emerge.
GENERATION I (1640-1675)

Early COCKRELL VIRGINIA Emigrants
The early COCKRELL emigrants of Virginia have not been traced well. Records are scarce to say the least. One of the following emigrants to Virginia may be our ancestor. Want a genealogical challenge? You have it.
In 1656 David ANDERSON “assigned” a Robert COCKRELL to Henry BROOKS. (See information on the Brooks family for more intriguing documentation to dream about. Is it a co-indence that these names seem to fit. What is David ANDERSON’s relationship to Walter ANDERSON? What is the relationship between Robert COCRELL and William COCKRIL of King George County, Virginia? The following information is presented to someday understand how these gentlemen are related.
Early Emigrants to Virginia by Peter Wilson COLDHAM named COCKRELL are:
William COCKERELL 1639 to Staffordshire County, England to Barbados
Robert COCKRELL 1644 to Westmoreland County, Virginia. At least his headright Robert
Alexander was from Westmoreland. Where did he go?
Ambrose COTTRELL 1649
Thomas COCKRELL 1650
John COCKERELL 1650 from Northumberland who married Hannah
William COCKRELL 1654
Andrew COCKRELL / COTTERELL 1656 of Northumberland County, Virginia.
Thomas COCKERELL 1658 from New Kent County, Virginia.
Jeremiah COTTRELL 1658 Northumberland County, Virginia. Where did he go?
Thomas COCKERELL 1658
Thomas COTTELL 1656 West side of the Elizabeth River
Robert COCKRELL 1664 Westmoreland County, Virginia
Nicholas COCKRELL 1678 to Barbados to Virginia.
Two Robert COCKRELL’s came to Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Parentage of William COCKRIL
It would have been a short ride through the country from Westmoreland or Northumberland County, Virginia to Richmond and King George County, Virginia and an even shorter boat ride up the Rappahannock River. The deeds that are found in Fauquier County, Virginia give proof of the marriage between William and Hannah.
Theory I (The Westmoreland Connection)
Early Immigrants to Westmoreland County, Virginia are William COCKRELL 1644 (do
not know where he went) and Robert COCKRELL to Westmoreland in 1644. The
following records are very interesting.
Westmoreland County, Virginia Book 1 page 62.
David ANDERSON ages 25 yeares or thereabouts being sworne and examined saith
That Henry Brookes solde to this Depon't a boy named Robert COCKRELL for
one yeare and that the said Brookes did make no Assignment of the said boy".
Etc. That indentures were delivered with the boy by Brookes. Signed David
ANDERSON. 20 Aug 1656. Jurat in Cur.
NOTE: The more I study this document the more I believe this may be our family; not
at all sure of the relationship.
But I am reasonably sure there is a relationship. Why David Anderson? Yes the names William and Robert are common, but they are the same. The name Original BROWN follows in both the Cockril information and in the ANDERSON family - “Orginal” is not a common name.

Will Oct 28, 1681 The last will and testament of William Butler was probated by his wife Jane, his widow by the oath of the witnesses: Charles PORTER, William COCKERILL, and Gilbert HUBBARD. Patrick SPENCE and Gilbert HUBBARD became her securities. Thomas Territt (sic) and Original BROWN laid out the children's proportions (p225) 25 Mar 1685.
Westmoreland County, Virginia 25 Mar 1685 Daniel White, Walter Morgan, and William COCKERILL to appraise the estate of Edward May deceased. Page 394
NOTE: This is PURE conjecture Could the above Robert or William COCKERILL be the father of our William COCKRIL? Do we have a connection to our immigrant ancestors? What is the relationship of David ANDERSON? The Original BROWN connection definitely makes sense. The names seem to fit.
John ANDERSON who left his will in 1721 in King George County, Virginia had a son in law named William BROWNE
In my opinion there is a definite relationship between the Anderson, Cockrill, Brown, Brooks, and other families.
Very Interesting
Theory II (The Northumberland Connection)
William COCKRELL may be related to the COCKRELL families in Northumberland
County, Virginia. The COCKRELL Path Through Northumberland and Lancaster
Counties and some of the Families that Path Touched by Isabel Gough.
One of the greatest experiences in my life was to meet Isabel Gough. Certainly she is the
Best authority on the COCKRILL family in the Northumberland County, Virginia. Mrs
GOUGH did not believe that our William COCKRIL was related to her family unless he
was an illegitimate child of one of the Northumberland County COCKRELL men.
Serious researcher should review her work on the Northumberland County, Virginia
Cockrell family.
I prefer to entertain the theory that our William COCKRIL of King George County,
Virginia was from Westmoreland, just speculation on my part..
"COCKRILL, Presley estate estimated and administered by William COCKRILL 17 Sep
1735." We have estimated the birth of our William COCKRILL as 1710, so this
William COCKRILL would have Been About the correct age to administer a will.
Isabel Gough spent her life studying these families. She makes the following quote.
"Oh The fact that William administered the estate of Presly may indicate they were
in. Were they Uncle and nephew and nephew and Uncle? Or were they half
brothers."
Isabel Gough sent us a letter more or less disproving the fact that our William was a
descendant of Andrew or John COCKRELL
To many coincidences not enough records.

His half sister Elizabeth Whaley was only 7 or 8 years old, and she was soon removed from the scene by her mother’s sister MRS JANE WROE of Westmoreland County. Who apparently raised Elizabeth in the Wroe household (see sketch of Lyne Family). Little Presley and his sister Susanna were care for by their own aunt Judith wif of Uncle Willoughby Cockrill. Who was made administrator of Presly Cockrill’s estate in September 1735.”
Letter from Isabel Gough, - Author & Historian
Dear Mr. Burgess, 10 Aug 1995
Thank you for sending me your manuscript to review and I have enjoyed reading it.
However, I don’t agree that William COTTRELL moved out of Northumberland County. My records show that William COTTRELL (and he was always COTTRELL) died on or before 20 9ber 1735 and his estate was administered in Northumberland County. On 9 ber 1735, a judgment was given to Joseph Wildy against the estate of William COTTRELL in the hands of George Berry, administrator of the estate. This may mean that Winifred COTTRELL BERRY, George’s wife was a full sister of William COTTRELL. Administrations often were family members. Elizabeth Wildy, who Angell COTTRELL refers to in her will as “my granddaughter Elizabeth Neale (Elizabeth married (1) Peter NEALE and (2) Joseph WILDY) was William’s sister or more than likely his half sister.
My theory is and I’ve never been able to prove it that John, who married Elizabeth PRESLEY, had been previously married and had sons, William, Thomas and possibily John. Also there is mention of a Hannah COCKRILL being in court from having an illegitimate child. I’ve never been able to determine whether that Hannah was daughter of John and Hannah or of John and Elizabeth. Apparently the daughter of John and Hannah never married because Elizabeth Presly COCKRELL speaks of her will of plates that were “my sister’s” (sister in law), Hannah COCKRELL’s.
What became of that child who would have been a COCKRELL? There was not as much stigma about illegitimate children in that time as it was later and I think the child would have been accepted into the household.
I find a William COCKRILL administrator the estate of Presly COCKRILL Sep 17, 1735. Now where did he come from? Since Wm COTTRELL had died by 20 9 ber 1735 he probably was not living by Sep 17, 1735. I can’t remember how the 9 ber would translate into months - what month it would be.
There were some COCKRILL’s that sprung up and I do not know from where unless they rooted in that illegitimate child, but they are that branch that eventually went over to the Flood Point in Northumberland County.
I do not think your William was the grandson of Andrew and Angell. Andrew (the emigrant) had two sons Andrew who died without issue and left a bequest to his sister in law Elizabeth COTTRELL, for taking care of him, and John who apparently was fairly well off and had several children by his two wives Lucretia NEALE and Elizabeth ?????. But this William apparently did not leave the Northumberland county. I am Sorry
The latter part of your manuscript I cannot help you with because I do not know anything about Anderson, etc. Seems to me someone else was looking for information about him, but I am not sure. So many people are looking for COCKRELL branches.
No one to my knowledge ever has traced the COCKRELL’s to Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Oh The fact that William administered the estate of Presly may indicate they were kin. Were they Uncle and nephew and nephew and Uncle? Or were they half brothers.
I do not know why Angel COCKRELL changed her name to COTTRELL - must have been a family fuss. The family remained COTTRELL forever after, except once in a while Daniel’s name was written COCKRELL. he was one of John’s sons.
I wish I could be more help.
I have been very sick and in hospital for 6 months. Am making slow improvement.
With best wishes
Isabel Gough

His half sister Elizabeth WHALEY was only 7 or 8 years old, and she was oon removed from the scene by her mother’s sister Mrs Jane Wroe of Westmoreland County, who apparently raised Elizabeth in the Wroe household (see sketch of Lyne Family). Little Presley and his sister Susanna were cared for by their own aunt Judith, wife of Uncle Willoughby Cockrill, who was made administrator of Presley Cockrill’s estate in Steptember 1735. page 24

NOTE: THIS IS PURE CONJECTURE Could the above Robert or William COCKERILL
be the father of our William COCKRIL? Do we have a connection to our immigrant ancestors?
What is the relationship of David ANDERSON? The Original BROWN connection
definitely makes sense. The names seem to fit.

John and William Heabeard Stafford Co.1673 imported by Henry Batts to Charles City County1674 imported by James Harrison south of Rappahanock RiverDavid Anderson was an early resident of the base of the northernneck of Virginia. The county name changes make it appear that hemoved up the Potomac but I would have to carefully trace his landto determine if he moved at all. It is likely that his descendantsmoved up the Potomac River to the Shenandoah Valley where in the18th century there is a long string of David Anderson families. In the 1750's there is a David Anderson in Westmoreland County which isprobably a descendant. No one appears to have traced this family andpublished anything.David 10/01/1743 Stafford Co1064a branches of Pasbitanzy Creek adj Thomas Harris & Richard BryanNNG F/136-137
